12/10 Update:
This site has received quite a few visits since I posted this page on Saturday 12/8. After seeing some of the comments posted on various sites from many different kinds of people, I feel that it’s important to provide a little more context and a bit of my personal story which explains why I created this site in the first place.
I created the Your Voice site with a desire to stimulate public discussion and encourage people to use their voice. The letter writing page on this site is intended to make it easy for people to write their representatives about whatever topic is important to them. There are also spaces for people to express their personal opinions (by submitting videos and sharing letters they have written). Our democracy was created with a system of checks and balances, with the people themselves providing the ultimate check when necessary. Intelligent public discussion provides important stimulus for that process. For the most part, the media does not currently promote intelligent discussion. Personally, I have lived most of the last 15 years of my life with my head in the sand, feeling somewhat isolated and believing that the destructive and hateful forces in the world were unstoppable and I better just try I and get what’s mine and ignore the rest.
However, I’ve had some experiences recently through which I began to think differently and question my assumption that I cannot have an impact on the world. I began to come out of some kind of slumber and in the process created this site. As a result of the many visitors to the site and the comments I’ve seen in the past two days, I feel more connected to the world. I can feel the people who are excited at being reminded that they are active participants in government. There are the quiet ones who have just used the site to write their letters. There are the angry ones who just need to spew their anger – get it out there.
This site was not created with impeachment in mind. While I purposely withheld any political agenda from the letter writing page, on Saturday, I did create this editorial page to encourage people to write letters to congress asking for Bush and Cheney’s impeachment. Many people have commented “It’s (impeachment) not going to happen”, and “Why bother now, when their term is almost over?”. I found the latter perspective particularly disturbing. The analogy that comes to mind is that of an abusive, alcoholic father and his daughter of 17. As her neighbor, we know she gets regular beatings. We want to help her but we say, “well, only one more year and then she’ll be able to get out of that situation.” Where is the heart in that?
I also have to laugh at people that quote Nancy Pelosi as saying “impeachment is off the table”. That’s like your parents saying “you can’t leave the table until you finish your string beans”. What are we, children? So what if Nancy Pelosi says it’s off the table. Bush has the lowest rating of any president in our history. There are reasons for that.
One truth that I understand in this life is that we’re all creating all the time. If you’re not consciously or actively creating, then you’re doing it unconsciously or by default. William McDonough, author of the book Cradle to Cradle, says of the environmental trouble we are facing “it’s part of our de facto plan, because we have no other plan”. And this is the crucial point. Through a grave lack of leadership, the Bush administration has not only wronged the American people with its self serving agenda, but perhaps more importantly, it has failed to provide positive leadership for our country. Think of all the things undone in the last seven years. So much possibility has been lost. For me, that is what impeachment is about – saying that we as human beings can do better than this – that we will not tolerate incompetence and foolishness in positions of leadership, and that we are paying attention. We will not sit quietly by and wait for this to end, because it won’t end with Bush. If the American people are not awake and paying attention, then our leaders will always run away with the power they are granted. If that power doesn’t come with scrutiny, then we are going to have problems. Ultimately, the country belongs to we the people, not the administration, the media, or corporate interests.
I’ll leave you with this fascinating video made by Bill Moyer in the 1980’s about the Iran Contra scandal. This video highlights the paranoid states of mind that people can get into (neo-cons), and reminds us why we need to keep paying attention because these people want to create war in the world. Twenty years gives us plenty of perspective with which to look back:
